ABSTRACT
There was
absence of parasites in the different fish species such as African striped
grunt (Parapristipoma octolineatum) ,(B) Sling fish, (Exocoetus volitans),(C)
Arius gigas, (D), (F)brackish water catfish (Chrisichthys nigrodi gilatus),(G)
long neck croacker (Pseudotolitus Oypus),(H) Nigerian tonguesole (Cynoglossus
browni) were all dissected, the gastrointestinal tracts, gills was subjected to
parasitological examination and there was ro parasites that was detected, even
if detected is likely to be found in fishes that are canibalistic. ( fishes
that feed on another of its kind).or migratory fishes. Physicochemicals
parameters and some heavy metals from station 1,2 and 3 of ibaka sampling sites
were analyzed to detect the level and presence of the parameters such as BODs,
COD, DO was calculated with Winkler's method.colour, PH, Turb, Tss, Tds, Sal,
Ec was calculated using calibrated Hanna Combo pH/conductivity / TDS tester
(HI98130.these parameters was recorded not to have exceeded the WHO standard
limit, the results indicates that station 2 has the highest values Jfollowed by
station 3 in most of all the parameters measured The UNICAM Solar 969 atomic
absorption spectrometry (AAS) was used to measure the heavy metals, but
vanadium(v) was not detected, The parameters measured are pH, Ec (us/cm),
Sal(g/l), Col(pt,co), Turb(nt), Tss(mg/l), TDS, Do, BODs and COD. The
objectives of the study were to identify the prevalence of helminth parasites
in fish samples of different species found in ibaka river in oron mbo Iga akwa
ibom; Io determine the physico-chemical parameters of Ibaka water; To determine
some heavy content parameters of Ibaka water; To test the heavy metal contents
of ibaka sampling site and their concentratons; to identify if it's safe for
human consumption; to indicate if there is increase in the population of
infected fishes as cause of the parasites; to indicate the relevance of its
result on impact of research and to add to existing knowledge of,
parasitological research on helminth parasites and physicochemical
parameterstheavy metals contents studies. The findings were, for fish parasite
the total number of fish examined for helminth parasite was eight. However,
none was observed to harbour the helminth parasite. The eight species of fishes
examined are African striped grunt (Parapristipoma octolineatum), long neck
croaker (Pseudotolitus typus), brackish water catfish (Chrisichthys
nigrodi-gilatus), Nigerian tonyuguesole (Cynoglossus browni), Spiny eel
(Notacanthus chemnitzii), Bonga shad (Ethmalosa fimbriata), giant sea catfish
(drius gigas) and flying fish (Exocoetus volitans).
