Proximate Analysis On Drosophila Melanogaster: A Candidate Of Unintentional Entomophagy:- Ude Adaku
ABSTRACT
Drosophila
melanogaster, an insect pest of the tomato fruit was cultured between the
months of June to October 2011 in the Biological Sciences Laboratory within the
Michael Okpara University ofAgriculture, Umudike in Abia State. Fresh tomatoes
were used for the culture. The harvested larva and pupa was oven-dried and used
to ascertain their nutritional content. The average weight of the harvested
larva and pupa during the experiment was between 13.29 g and 21.53 g. The
highest number and weight were obtained in the third harvest. The result on the
proximate analysis indicated that the moisture content in these immature stages
was high. It had the highest value of 30% followed by the ash content (29.5 %),
then the carbohydrate content (24.43 %) and protein (15.27 %). The fat content
had the least value of 0.77%. Thus we may conclude that the presences ofthe
larva and pupa stages of D. melanogasterin our diet, though unintended, add to
our nutrition
