Haematology Profile Of Male Wistar Rats Administered With Methanolic Extract Of Citrullis Lanatus (Water Melon) And Thioacetamide (Taa):- Agu, Florence Chibugo
ABSTRACT
The present study evaluated the effect of
methanol extract of the rind of Citrullus lanatus on some haematological
parameters in rats exposed to thioacetamide. Ten wistar albino rats having an
average weight of 100 g were used in this study and they were divided into five
groups each consisting of five rats. Group 1 received thioacetamide (300
mg/kg), while Group 2 received 300 mg/kg of Thioacctamidc (TAA) and 250mg/kg
ofmethanol extract ofthe rind of Citrullus lanatus extract for 7 days. All
animals received dextrose water and ringer lactate solutions (10 mg/kg/day)
intraperitoneally to prevent renal failure, hypoglycemia and electrolyte
imbalance till the end of the experiment. Treatment were given by oral
administration of methanol extract ofthe rind of Citrullus lanatus which lasted
for 7 days. At the end of the 7th day, rats in each groups were sacrificed and
blood samples were collected by ocular puncture for the determination of
haematological parameters which include: PCV, RBC, TWBC, HB, MCV, MCH, MCHC.
Results from this study showed a significant increase in (p <0.05) MCV, HB,
MCH and MCHC values (Group 1) as well as a significant decrease (p<0.05) in
TWBC, RBC and PCV values (Group 2). It was observed that the animals responded
differently after being treated with the methanolic extract ofthe rind
ofCitrullus lanatus, which shows that this plant extract can be used as an
effective agent in normalizing blood cell indices after TAA induce toxicity.
