Abstract

This work investigated the effect of methanol leaf extract of Asystasia gangetica on wistar albino rats using haematology indices. The animal were divided into 3 groups, group 1 represented normal control and received only normal feed. Group 2 is standard drug group treated with standard drug, group 3 is Asystasia gangetica group administered Aystasia gangetica 200mg/kg and 400mg/kg of methanolic leaf extract of Asystasia gangetica, for 21 days after which blood was drawn by ocular puncture for assays. The haematological parameters assayed were Packed Cell Volume, Red Blood Cell, White Blood Cell, Haemoglogin level and Platelets count. The results showed non-significant (P>0.05) increase in packed cell volume in group 3 when compared to both normal control and standard drug group. Also there was a significant (P<0.05) increase in haemoglobin level in group 3 when compared to normal and standard drug group. Red Blood Cells showed significant (P<0.05) decrease in group 3 when compared to normal control group, Results showed significant (P<0.05) increase in white blood cells in group 3 when compared with normal control and standard drug group, While in platelets count the results showed significant(E<0.05) decrease in group 3 when compared with normal group. Therefore, The results of the study showed that haematologic effect of Asystasia gangetica leaf extract stimulates blood cells.
