ABSTRACT
The study is concerned with an investigation into fraud and financial Malpractices as a leading factor to bank failure - A case study of oceanic bank. By way of background, the study commenced with an overview of the definition of fraud and the business environments and its effects on business growth and survival. Using oceanic bank as a case study it was established that in spite of the control measure set in by central bank of Nigeria. Oceanic bank is still saddled with the problem of bad image arising mostly from fraudulent practices. With the above stated problem, the general objective for this study is to ascertain if fraud and malpractices can lead to the failure of oceanic bank. The specific objectives of the study were. To ascertain if fraud affects the achievement of the corporate goals of oceanic bank. To ascertain if poor internal control system contributes to high level of fraudulent practices in Oceanic Bank. To determine the extent fraud affects the profit level of oceanic bank. To ascertain how fraud affects the capital base of oceanic bank. To determine if inadequate staffing in internal audit unit can lead to its bank's failure. Data collection was analysed using percentage average method and analysis of variance. Majors' findings of the study were. The study revealed that oceanic bank is unable to achieve its objective. It was also revealed that fraud and financial malpractices was the most important factors that have contributed to
poor performance of oceanic bank. At the end, the following recommendations were made: Oceanic bank management should design appropriate policies. The organisation should also strengthen its internal control system.
