ABSTRACT
Food choices and dietary practices among women of
reproductive age (WRA) are critical factors influencing their nutritional
status and health outcomes. This Study explores the food choices, common
dietary practices and their implications on the well-being of women of
reproductive age from (15- 49years) in Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia
State, Nigeria. The study aims to identify factors influencing dietary
behavior, including cultural, socio-economic, environmental, and individual
determinants. It also interprets the implications of these dietary practices on
health outcomes. The research combines a crosssectional survey, employing
questionnaires, to assess socio-demographic characteristics, dietary intake, in
order to gain insights to individual perspectives on food choices. The results
indicate that food choices are influenced by socioeconomic status, cultural
beliefs, nutritional knowledge, and accessibility to diverse food groups. The
dietary practices identified in this study have significant implications for
the nutritional well-being ofwomen of reproductive age. The consumption of
nutrient-dense foods, such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, is crucial
for maintaining optimal reproductive health. Conversely, the high intake of
processed and high-calorie foods increases the risk of diet-related noncommunicable
diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The age
distribution of the respondents, with 39.5% falling within the 36-45 years age
range, underscores the importance of targeted nutrition interventions for this
life stage. Women in this age group are likely to be experiencing mid-life
transitions, including peri-menopause and menopause, which necessitate specific
dietary adjustments to mitigate symptoms and prevent chronic diseases. The
findings highlight the need for targeted nutritional interventions to improve
dietary diversity and nutrient intake among WRA. Strengthening awareness
programs, improving food accessibility, and addressing cultural misconceptions
about nutrition are essential steps toward enhancing the health of women and
their future offspring.
