ABSTRACT
The study was conducted at the humid rainforest zone of
South — Eastern Nigerian in Umudike in Abia State, at Michael Okpara University
of Agriculture to evaluate, Ageratum conyzoides (Goat weed) Alliu,n sativurn
(Garlic). Ricinus communis (Castor seed) aqueous extracts on the control of
some key field insect pests of cowpea Vigna unguiculata (L) Waip. The study
which was carried out between September and December 2007 consisted of using
the following aqueous extracts of Goat weed, garlic and Castor seed applied at
once a week, twice — a — week, thrice — a — week and control. The experiments
were laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three
replications. The results obtained showed that the plant extracts were very
effective and they significantly (P <0.001) reduced the population of some key insect pests - Ooctheca mulablis, Zonozerus variegatus, Clavigralla tomentosicolis (Stals) and Nezara viridula (L). The results also showed that once a week, twice a week and thrice a week application regimes of the extracts were highly significant than the control plots on infestation level of all the nine insect pests that were checked. There is a significant reduction of infestation by pod borer and pod sucking bugs as can be seen in Clavigralla tomentosicolis, Anoplocneinis curvipes but did not significantly differ from C. toinentosicolis and Mirperus jaculus (P >.
001). Once, twice and thrice weekly spray regimes of the extracts did not have
significant effect on the control of Nezara viridula and Riptortus dent ipes on
cowpea. Therefore, Goat weed once a week, and twice a week, castor seed once a
week, twice a week and Garlic once a week, twice a week aqueous extracts
spraying could be recommended for use to poor farmers who may not be able to
afford the cost of synthetic insecticides, for mitigating the attack of some
key insect pests of cowpea control to increase crop yield.
