ABSTRACT
The study examined the Extent of
Availability and Utilization of Instructional Materials for Teaching
Mathematics in Junior Secondary School. A total number of 40 Junior Secondary
II Teachers were purposively sampled from twenty randomly selected schools in
Umuahia of Abia State, Nigeria. Data's were gotten using a well-constructed checklist
to know the extent and availability of the usage of instructional materials.
The study answered the following research question which are: To what extent
are instructional material available for teaching mathematics at JSS level?, To
what extent are the instructional material utilized in teaching mathematics at
JSS level?, What is the influence of school location on the availability of
instructional materials in mathematics?, What is the influence of school
location on the utilization of materials for teaching mathematics at JSS?. Two
hypotheses were formulated and tested using West at p level of. 0.05 to determine
significant level. Findings from .he study showed that materials are available,
most materials available are not utilized, school location has little or no
influence on the availability of instructional materials and school location
has little or no influence on the Utilization of instructional materials.
Hypotheses showed that school location had significant influence on
availability of instructional materials in teaching mathematics at JSS level
and School location had significance influence on the mean score of
instructional materials. Based on this findings, it is recommended that there
should be a well-articulated, planned process of using instructional materials,
curriculum development and instructional strategies which effectively link
teacher training schools with other education agencies.
