ABSTRACT

 Extended spectrum beta lactamase producers in ready to eat fruit salad were investigated which a total number of twenty (20) fruit salad samples were used for this study. Six (6) bacteria species were isolated which belong to the genera of E. coil, Pseudomonas sp., Salmonella sp, Kiebsiella sp, Shigella sp and Proteus sp. The total viable count of fruit salad ranged from 1.9 x 105 to 5.0 x 105 while total coliform ranged from 1.0 x 103 to 5.0 x 102. E. coli 70% revealed the highest percentage occurrence while Shigelia sp 30% had the lowest occurrence among the isolates. The highest mar index was by 0.8 while the lowest was by 0.2. The disc diffusion method was used for the antibiotic susceptibility test, multiple disc containing 10 impregnated antibiotic disc which containsCefotaxime(3 0j.ig),Amoxicillin(20tg),Ofloxacin(5 j.tg),Na1idixicAcid(30pg),Gentamicin (1 0.ig), Nitrofurantoin (300 g),Cefuroxime(3 0tg), Ceftriazone(3 0tg), Cefixime(5 tg), Levofloxacin(5 tg) was used. The result showed that E. coil was highly suspectible to Nalidix Acid 7(50%) and Ceftriazone 7(50%) while the most resistant was Kiebsiella 10(100%) against Cefotaxime. The Extended spectrum beta lactamase phenotypic screening using CLSI breakpoint showed 7 E. coil, 3 Pseudomonas sp, 4 Kiebsiella sp, 2 Salmonella and 3 Proteus sp were positive. 5 E. coil, 1 Pseudomonas sp, 2 kiebsielia sp and 2 Proteus were confirmed Extended Spectrum Beta Lactarnase producers using the Double Disk Synergy Test (DDST) method. The result of this study shows that most of the drugs were multi drug resistance and with high frequency of Extended spectrum beta lactamase producers
