Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamase (ESBL) Producers From Eggroll Sold In Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture Umudike.
ABSTRACT
Extended spectrum beta lactamase (ESBL) producers from
eggroll sold in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU), the
aim of this study is to detect ESBL producers from eggroll sold in MOUAU. A
total of 20 eggroll samples were cultured on McConkey agar, Eosine methyl blue
agar, Nutrient agar, and Salmonella Shigella agar, for the presence of
pathogenic bacteria. The isolates were screened for ESBL production using the
Clinical Laboratory Standard Institute (CLSI) break point ceftriazone (30 .tg)
and cefotaxime (30 p.g). Suspected ESBLs producing organisms from screening
test were subjected to double disc synergy test (DDST) for confirmation. Out of
the 20 eggroll samples analysed , 20 Gram negative enteric bacteria were
isolated and these include: Escherichia co/i 15(38.0%), Kiebsiella sp 7(18.
0%),Salmonella sp 9(23.0%) and Shigella sp 8(21.0%). Detection of ESBL among
Gram negative isolates based on CLSI revealed that 9(23.0%) of the isolates
were confirmed as ESBLs producers using Double Disc Synergy Test. This study
indicated that eggroll can be contaminated by ESBLs producing bacteria and may
result to infection defying antibiotic treatment by humans which have public
health implications for the general public
