Exclusive Breast-Feeding Amongst Working Mothers In Umuahia And Enugu Metropolis
ABSTRACT
In all mammalian species, the
reproductive cycle comprises of both pregnancy and breast-feeding. In the
absence of the later, one of these species, man inclusive could not have
survived. This means that man needs breast milk for survival. Exclusive
breast-feeding has been recognized as a child survival strategy (Davis-Adetugbo
1996). The basis for the recommendation of breast feeding is primarily the
evolutionary design of human milk and the presence of protective factors in the
milk. Breast-feeding is the art of feeding a newborn infant with mother's milk.
In order words, it is the natural way to feed the baby. Breast milk is produced
by human breast. For over millions of years, milk has proved to be optimum
source of nourishment for the new born infant. Since breast milk is the source
of nutrition for infants, it is effective in ensuring the optimal growth and
development (Monow-Tucak 1988). It has a chemical constitution appropriate to
the digestive capacity of the infant and the nutritional balance of its
proteins, sugar and fats is exactly what the baby requires.
