ABSTRACT
The study
examine the contributions of auditors in fraud detection and prevention in
selected financial Institutions. The study covered Access Bank Plc and Eco Bank
Plc in Umuahia, Abia State. The specific objectives of the were to determine
the impact of the auditors in fraud detection in financial institutions, to
determine the impact of the auditors in fraud prevention in financial
institutions, to what extent is auditors' qualification and experience have in
fraud detection and prevention. The study adopted surety research design and
simple random sampling technique. The population of the study comprised of
twenty (20) staff of Access Bank Plc in Umuahia and twenty five (25) staff of
Eco Bank Plc in Umuahia, Abia State. Primary data was sourced form distribution
of questionnaire to staff of Access Bank Plc and Eco Bank Plc in Uinuahia, Abia
State. A total of 45 questionnaire were distribution and 40 were proper filled
questionnaire returned In effect, 40 of the respondents constituted the sample
of properly filled questionnaire which translates into a 9Z 6% rate of returned
complete questionnaire while one (1) of the was wrongly filled translating into
2.2%. a tester-test was conducted to ensure validity and reliability of of the
data. The data were ,9resented using percentage table and the hypothesis were
tested using simple regression model (SPSS.) anci Chi-Square. The findings of
the study reveals that Auditors has positive and significance iciest on fraud
prevention in Nigeria financial institution; auditors has positive and
significance impact on fraud prevention in Nigeria financial institution;
qualification and experience of auditors have a positive and significance effect
in fraud prevention. and detection in Nigeria financial institutions. It was
recommended that government should enact laws/legislations that will grant
auditors in the country unit autonomy to discharge their functions effectively
this will help in fraud detection in the banking sector. Effective auditor
techniques/procedures capable of preventing fraud should b' installed by
accountant that adequate measures and control should be put in place. Auditors
should increase the scope of their activities on the efficiency of banks
internal control system, risk assessment and system audit as this will enhance
the detection of fraudulent activities.
