Evaluation Of The Anti-Inflammatory And Antioxidant Activities Of The Methanol Leaf Extract Of Newbouldia Laevis
ABSTRACT
The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of the methanol leaf extract of Newbouldia laevis were determined in this study. The acute toxicity profile and phytochemical content of the extract were also evaluated. Extraction of the coarse powdered leaf with absolute methanol by cold maceration yielded 4.8% w/w of extract. Twenty-five rats were weighed and randomly divided into five groups, with two groups serving as positive and negative control and the• remaining three groups given varying doses of the extract. The extract showed significant (p<O.05) reduction of carageenan-induced paw edema model in a dose-dependent manner at 200mg/kg, 400mg/kg and 800mg/kg. The antioxidant activity of the extract was significant at the highest concentration but was generally lower as compared to the ascorbic acid reference. The acute toxicity test produced no casualties or adverse reactions even at the 'highest dose administered indicating the short-term safety of the extract. The phytochemical screening revealed the presence of tannins, and flavonoids which could be responsible for the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant action of the extract. -a Based on these results it was concluded that, methanol leaf extract of Newbouldia laevis possessed anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
