Evaluation Of Some Toxicants Found In Fruit Juices Marketed In Umuahia, Abia State Nigeria:- Nwachukwu, Kenneth C.
ABSTRACT
Nitrate, nitrite, malondialdehyde
content and the pH of fourteen samples of fruit juices purchased at retail
outlets of Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria- were estimated. Nitrite was determined
spectromctrically while nitrate was determined after reduction to ’ nitrite
using cadmium column. All the samples that were analyzed showed detectable
amounts of nitrite. Some of the samples contained detectable levels of nitrate
while some (nine), contained no detectable levels of nitrate, for nitrite, the
values in mg/dl range from 1.03-6.23. ?the levels of nitrate in mg/1 range from
1.74 - 4.56. The pH values ranges from 2.41-3.40, which is ■considered too acidic for
human consumption because it can lead to a condition known as acidosis. The
malondialdehyde (a deleterious by-product of lipid peroxidation) was estimated
spcctrometrically. Malondialdehyde was detected in all the samples with levels
ranging from 1.98-9.71 mg/dl. The toxicological implication of these findings
are discussed
