ABSTRACT
The efficacy of acetone extracts of Azadirachu indica seed, A. hid/ca leaf A.md/ca bark,Zingiber officinale rhizome, Caspsic:iin fri, iescens fruit, Monodora nzyristica seed, Jatropha curcas seed, mixture of Z. (?IticI,zale rhizome + Caspsicuin frzitescens fruit + M. uiyrislica seed + Azadirachia liL lieu seed arid a synthetic insecticide Pirimiphos methyl were evaluated for the control of infestation of Sitophilus zeamais (Mots). The ranking of the effectiveness of extracts in the control of S. zeanzais (Mots.) was Pirimiphos - methyl > Azciiiracta hid/ca seed > M. niyristica seed >1 Mixture > J. curcasseed> C. fruie.scens fruit > A. indicajeaf > Z.officinale rhizome> A. md/ca bark.. Generally Pirimiphos - methyl, M n;yris/ica seed, C'. frutescens fruit, A. indica seed and mixture were significantly superior (P=O.05) in their efficacy to other tested extracts. Based on weevil perforation index (WPI) all the botanials except Z. officinale rhizome showed positive protectant effect. The plant extracts with positive protectant eflèct have potential as seed protectants against S. zearnais (Mots.).
