Evaluation Of Infant Feeding Practices Among Nursing Mothers In Umuahia South Local Government Area Of Abia State.
ABSTRACT
Adequate nutrition is essential for
any infant to achieve optimal growth, development and good health because of
the rapid growth and brain development taking place at infant stage. There is
good evidence that appropriate feeding in the first year of life improves the
outcome of children's physical and mental health throughout life (Srilankshmi,
2008). According to Hamlyn, (2002), the growth rate of infant is remarkably
rapid in the first two years of life. The diet has remarkable effect on the
child's physical development. The child also lacks essential minerals, vitamins
and adequate protein and may develop deficiency diseases which can lead to
mental retardation. Hence, the need for adequate nutrition is particularly
urgent during infancy. The child's early feeding experiences affects his total
personality, development and constitute his first and major contact with the
outside world (Barasi, 2003). There is a need therefore for proper nutrition
practices and expert care in the first two years of life which cannot be
overemphasized. Thus, the need for adequate nutrition knowledge and it's
adoption.
