ABSTRACT
The
phytochemical, and the eliciting potentials of high concentration of ginger
(Zingiber officinale) extract in eocoyam plant was studied. The aqueous and
acetone phytochemical screening revealed that the extract of ginger contained
alkaloids, saponins and tannins at low level. The acetone extract contained
phenols at high level, while the aqueous extract had a low level of phenols. •
Flavonoids was detected at low level for the aqueous extract while the acetone
extract showed flavonoids at a moderate level. The result for the phytochemical
composition of cocoyam leaf treated with acetone extract of Zingiber officinale
showed that at 1% ginger after spray, many secondary metabolites like phenols,
alkaloids, flavonoids and anthocyanins were elicited compared to the tween 20
control before and after spray and the 1% ginger before spray respectively. An
increase in the ginger concentration from 1% to 5% showed a significant
(p<0.05) increase in the secondary metabolites elicited when compared to the
control groups and l%ginger after spray. Based on these findings, it may be
suggested that Zingiber officinale (ginger) has a high eliciting potential and
can serve as a biological inhibitor of plants pest and diseases owing to its
high phytochemical content.
