Five elite sweetpotato (Ipomnea batatas (L) Lam) genotypes were evaluated for early bulking rate in a field experiment conducted at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike experimental firm. The genotypes were laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications during the 2006 cropping season and data was collected on the following agronomic traits: number of saleable and unsaleable roots, weight of saleable and unsaleable roots, weight of roots dried matter, fresh biomass weight and weight of dried biomass matter. Proximate analysis was carried out for root dried matter, ash, protein, fibre, oil and carbohydrate contents. Analysis of variance was carried out and least significant difference (LSD0.05) was used for means separations. No tuberous roots had bulked at 4 weeks after planting (4WAP). Analyses showed that there were no significant (P>0.05) differences among the means of the genotypes for fresh and dry biomass weight at 4 WAP, while significant (P<0.05) differences were observed for bulked saleable, unsaleable and total roots number, root dry matter and weight of saleable roots at 8 WAP, and for all the traits except weight of total roots at 12 WAP. All the genotypes had better of proximate analysis at 12 WAP compared to the results of other workers who reported similar results at 16 WAP. From the results of this study, TIS 87/0087 expressed early bulking trait and could be used in developing early maturing varieties of sweetpotato.
