ABSTRACT

A study was conducted to determine the effect of cross-breeding normal feather, naked neck and frizzle local chicken with exotic Arbor Acre broiler breeder stock on growth, egg production and egg quality characteristics of hybrid chicken in a hot-humid tropical environment. A total of 104 hybrid chicks hatched in seven batches were used for the experiment. The base population (parent stock) male and female were mated using artificial insemination technique to generate main (E x NL, E x Na and E x F) and reciprocal crosses (NL x E, Na x E and F x E). Results of the study showed that the reciprocal (NL x E, Na x E and F x E) crosses had significantly heavier body weight at day-old ranging from (30.1±0.9-30.5±0.69) as compared to main cross (26.16±1.0— 26.8±0.86). The reciprocal F1hybrids maintained the superiority in body weight over their main cross counterparts until 21 weeks of age. The NL xE had the highest final body, weight of2021g at 21 weeks and NL xE and Na x E had early sexual maturity (158.33±1.2 and 157±1.73 respectively), significantly more eggs (39.15±2.77 and 41.0±1.7 respectively) at 90 days and bigger egg weight at first egg. The reciprocal F1hybrids had higher haugh units ranging from 104.0±1.98 — 106.29±0.62 than their main cross counterparts. It seems obvious from the study that the direction for genetic improvement of the local chicken is to exploit maternal effects arising from reciprocal cross breeding.
