ABSTRACT
Hypertension
is the major health problem throughout the world because of its high prevalence
and its association with increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. The aim of
present study was to evaluate the liver function changes in hypertensive
patients receiving lisinopril in umuahia Abia state, Nigeria. The subjects used
for this study were thirty-five (35) adult aged between 30 and 60 who were
diagnosed positive for hypertension and on Lisinopril treatment and fifteen
(15) adult aged between 18 and 24 who were negative for hypertension served as control
subjects. All the participants after taking informed consent were subjected to
detailed history and blood collected by venipuncture for the study.
Students-'t' test was used to find out the significant difference between the
two groups. P values less than 0,05 was considered the level of significance.
The icsult showed a significant increase (p<0.05) in aspartate
aminotransferase activity (AST), urea and bilirubin level in the hypertensive
group taking lisinopril when compared will* tnc noimotensivc control group
while the results for alanine aminotransferase (ALT), creatinine and alkaline
phosphatase (ALP) did not show significant difference (p>0.05) in die
hypertensive gioup (lisinopiil) when compared with the normotensive control
group. From the results obtained it can bcr concluded that lisinopril, an
Antihypertensive drug has an impact on biochemical biomarkers such as AST, Urea
and Bilirubin
