Evaluation Of Anti inflammatory And Analgesic Properties Of Ethanol Leaves Extract Of Newbouldia Laevis In Wistar Albino Rats:- Egesi, Modestus C
ABSTRACT
This
work studied the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of the ethanol leaf
extract of Newbouldia laevis in wistar albino rats. Investigations were carried
out on acetic acid-induced writhing and egg albumen-induced hind paw oedema in
rats. A total oftwenty (20) adult male albino wistar rats weighing 65 - 120g
were used for the study and grouped into 5 groups (n=4). Group I (Standard):
The animals were provided with Vital growers mash feed and water ad libitum.
Group II (Control): They were administered normal saline.Group III through V
were administered the plant extract at 250 mg/kg, 500 mg/kg and 750 mg/kg body
weight, respectively. The results showed that the ethanol extract possessed
significant (p< 0.05) anti-nociceptive activity between 500 and 750 mg/kg
orally and also dose dependent anti-inflammatory activity between 250 and 750
mg/kg in rats. These effects were compared favourably with that expressed by
morphine and indomethacin, respectively (10 mg/kg). From the results obtained,
the extract exhibited highest anti-nociceptive and antiinflammatory activities
at the dosage of 750 mg/kg. These data corroborate with the traditional use of
this plant in the treatment of rheumatic pain and other types ofpain reported
in traditional medicine.
