ABSTRACT
The importance of agriculture in the lives of the people cannot be over- emphasized. It provides food for all and sundry, raw materials for industries and it has been a major foreign exchange earner to many countries in Africa. Similarly, agriculture provides employment opportunities for the people as well as the provision of capital for economic development (Okeke, 1988) Moreover, through agricultural activities there is the creation of market for agricultural implements whereby many farm implements and equipment are produced and purchased. In spite of the importance of agriculture to our national economy, the sector is not producing maximally to meet up with the food and fibre requirement of the country (Idachaba, 2000). The most serious problem causing this situation is attributed .largely to very slow pace of adoption of improved technologies in virtualty all aspects of agricultural production in the country. It therefore becomes imperative that the agricultural sector should be modernized and aligned to produce marketable surpluses to meet up with the present food demand instead of resorting to importation of basic food items. Again, it should be noted that information and communication are essential ingredients needed for effective transfer of technologies that are designed to boost agricultural production. it is said to be a resource that must be acquired and used in order to make an informed decision. Those who possess appropriate and timely information will make an informed and a more rational decision than those without. According to (Dervin, 1976) individuals whether literate or non- literate need information in order to make or take a decision. So for the agricultural sector to produce enough to meet the requirements of the economy, agricultural technologies that have been developed would have to be effectively communicated to the intended beneficiaries (Ekpere, 1996). For farmers to benefit from such technologies, they must first have access to them and learn how to effectively utilize them in their farming systems. This is the function of extension agencies in Nigeria.
