ABSTRACT
Urinary tract infection (UTI) is
one of the most common bacterial infections in different ages which cause acute
and chronic diseases such as hypertension and chronic kidney disease. The aim
of this study was to describe the demographic characteristics of individuals,
isolate the infectious agent and antibiotic resistance patterns of patients
from Abia State Specialist Hospital, Umuahia. Urine samples were collected in
sterile urine bottles from 50 samples with different ages and from May to July
2018. The sample was cultured on MacConkey agar and Blood agar. The Gram
negative organism present were confirmed to be Escherichia coli, while Gram
positive organisms were confirmed to be Staphylococcus saprophyticus and
Streptococcus spp. Out of these 50 samples, 24 bacterial isolates were
obtained. Escherichia coil constituted the predominant organism and was
responsible for 12(50.0%) of the cases of UTI. This was followed by
Staphylococcus saprophyticus 8(33.3%) and Streptococcus spp 4(16.7%). The
findings emphasize the need for personal hygiene among male and female patients
and provision of basic infrastructure such as toilet facilities. The Gram
positive isolates Staphylococcus were susceptible to Ciprofloxacin 1(12.5%),
Zinnacef 2(16.7%) and Levoxacin 1(12.5%) The findings emphasize the need for
personal hygiene among the female and male patients and provision of basic
infrastructure such as toilet facilities in their different homes.
