ABSTRACT
Agricultural Science is one ofthe important
subjects taught in Nigeria secondary schools which aims to develop knowledge,
skills and attitude ofstudents towards agriculture. However, most students in
Umuahia North Local Government Area who offer this subject are exposed to
entrepreneurial endeavors or practice and life competency skills. Despite this,
there is a poor trend of students’ achievement in Agricultural Science as
evident in the West African Examination Council’s Senior Schools Certificate
Examination ofyears 2010 to 2014. In this study effort was made to correlate
entrepreneurial skills with students’ achievement and interest in Agricultural
Science in Umuahia North Local Government Area. Four research questions and
four null hypotheses was adopted for the study. Correlational design was
adopted for the study. The sample size for the study consisted of 100
respondents made up of 56 males and 44 female seniorsecondary class two
students drawn from public co-educational secondary schools in Umuahia North
Local Government Area of Abia State through multistage sampling techniques.
Data was obtained using Agricultural Science Concept Achievement Test (ASCAT)
and StudentsAgricultural Science Interest Rating Scale (SASIRS). The
reliability of the instruments was done using Spilt-half method of Pearson
Moment Correlation Coefficient (PMCC) and Cronbach Alpha (a) for ASCAT and
SASIRS respectively and reliability coefficient indices of 0.75 and 0.89 were
gotten for ASCAT and SASIRS respectively. Mean, standard deviation and simple
percentages were used to answer the four research questions, while Pearson’s r,
R2 (coefficient of determination) and multiple regression analysis were used to
test the null hypotheses at 0.05 levels of significance. The findings revealed
that: though there was little variance between personal characteristics,
practical skills and students’ academic achievement in Agricultural Science,
the variance did not cause a significantly different between them. There is
also no significant difference between gender and students’ academic
achievement based on personal characteristics and practical skills though the a
little variance did exist between gender and students’ academic achievement in
Agricultural Science based on personal characteristics and practical skills.
The r, and R2 gotten for hypothesis one to four (HOi to HO<) are .04 and .002,
.04 and .002, .12 and 0.2, .10 and .01 respectively.
