ABSTRACT
Anthocleista djalonensis has been found to
have phytochemical properties and active ingredients of Endocrine modulatory
activities. This study on Endocrine modulatory potentials of extracts of A.
djalonensis leaves in experimentally stressed rats was carried out to
investigate the potential effects of extracts ofA.djalonensis on Follicle
stimulating hormone (FSH), Luteinizing hormone (LH), Estradiol (E2), Prolactin
(PRL). 25 Female albino rats were randomly selected and grouped into five
groups, A, B, C, D, and E respectively with A as control. Group B was given the
standard drugs (Diazepam) while the rest C, D, and E were given the extracts at
200 and 400mg/kg body weight of crude and butanol fraction respectively. Both
the standard drug and extracts were administered orally for 7days. Blood
samples were collected from the rats using 5ml syringes dispersed into various
test tubes and allowed for some time to clot. Clotted samples were centrifuged
and Serum collected for further laboratory procedures. Serum concentration of
the hormones were determined by ELISA method. The result of these study showed
significant (P<0.05) reduction in all the tested groups compared to the
standard and control experiments. Grouped D recorded the least PRL (1.26±0.37)
followed by Group E (1.31±0.14) and then Group C (1.52±0.45). Group E recorded
the least LH (5.41±0.12) followed by Group C (5.65±0.17) and then Group D
(6.01±0.24). Group E recorded the least E2 (4.95±0.29) followed by Group D
(5.22±0.01) and then Group C (5.30±0.76). Group C recorded the least FSH
(3.24±0.19) followed by Group E (3.35±0.02) and then Group D (4.21±0.52)
compared to the standard and control. The results of this study indicates
metabolic stress due to reduced immune activities induced by the extracts. The
results of this experiment show that this extract possesses negative effects on
the female reproductive hormones and could not be used in the management of
primary ovarian failure, irregular menstruation and miscarriage, though low
prolactin is a positive fertility indicator.
