ABSTRACT
An experiment was conducted during the 2004 cropping season at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike research farm to determine the effects of plant population and spatial arrangement on growth, yield and productivity of 'okralamaranth intercropping system. This was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with seven treatments and three replicates. Okra was planted in monoculturô and also intercropped with amaranth after three weeks of okra planting, between or within okra rows with either ø 55,500 pintsha or 111,100 plants hi1 ., Results indicated that, intercropping reduced the grd' and yield of okra and amaranth relative to their sole crops. Okra depressed the growth and yield of amaranth in the intercrop. The growth and yield components of the sole amaranths increased with increase in plant density for yield hi1. Comparative assessment of the mixture suggests that it is better to grow the two crops separately. However, there was yield advantage of only 8% in the okra between 55,500 amaranth plants ha indicating that more decrease in plant population of amaranth may increase the yield advantage. The results were discussed in the light of the competitive ability of the cornpol!ents fl the system.
