ABSTRACT
This study on effects of mentoring on the performance of
lecturers in selected Nigeria Universities was conducted using two universities
in South eastern part of Nigeria viz: MOUAU and IMSU. The study tried to
examine the demographic characteristics and the nature of relationship that
exists between the respondents, ascertain the benefits and drawbacks of
mentoring from the respondents, identify the personal attributes of mentors and
mentees; examine the impacts of mentoring on the work performance of the
respondents; and determine the factors that influence work performance of the
mentees in the selected universities. Thus, 291 lecturers were selected using
simple random sampling technique. Data was obtained through primary and
secondary sources. Data from respondents was analyzed using Descriptive
Statistics, Mean scores from Likert scale, Chi-square, and Binary Probit
regression. The study employed E-Views 8.0 statistical package for analysis.
The study showed that there is a strong relationship that exists between the
mentors and their mentees in the universities under study. Result also showed
that employee productivity (100%) is the highest benefit of mentoring while
incompatibility of the personal characteristics of the mentors and mentees, is
the major drawbacks they experience in the selected universities. Means scores
from Likert scale revealed high performance of the mentees subject to their key
performance indicators. The Binary Probit regression showed that the key
performance indicators were positively significant to the performance of th
lecturers in the selected universities. The test for null hypothesis was
rejected showing that alternatively, mentoring has positive effects on the
performance of lecturers in the selected Nigeria universities. Hence, the
researcher recommended that new, junior, and! or novice lecturers should be
assigned to senior and/or more experienced colleagues for mentoring as this
will enhance their work performances.
