Effect Of The Ethanol Extracts Of Gouania Longipetala On The Uric Acid Vitamin And Catalase Concentration Of Acetaminophen Overdose Induced Albino Rats
ABSTRACT
In this study, the effect of ethanol extract of Gouania longipetala on uric acid, vitamin E and catalase levels in overdosed albino rats. Twenty five (25) male albino rats weighing 85g-150g were randomly assigned into five (5) groups of 5 rats each. Group 1, the normal control, received water and feed only; group 2 received 1 .5g/kg body weight (bw) acetaniinophen (Paracetamol); group 3 received 1 .5g/kg bw acetaminophen + 200mg/kg bw ethanol extract of Gouania longipetala; group 4 received 1.5g1kg bw acetaniinophen + 600mg/kg bw ethanol extract of Gouania longipetala and group 5 received 1.5g/kg bw acetaminophen + 1000mg/kg bw ethanol extract of Gouania longipetala. Acetaminophen at the dose of 1500mg/kg produced toxicity as manifested by the significant rise of catalase activity;catalase activity was significantly (p <0.05) elevated in the acetaminophen alone treated animals. Pretreatment with Gouania longipetala ethanol leaf extract extract (200 mg and 1000mg) siginiflcantly(P<0.05) decreased the activity of catalase. Analysis of the vitamin E content show that vitamin E was non-significantly reduced in acetyl-para- aminophenol (APAP) treated animals While significantly increased in the animals treated with the extract (1000mg). In conclusion the effect of Gouania logipetala leaf extract against acetaminophen-induced acute toxicity is mediated either by preventing the formation of N-acetyl-p-benzoquinoneimine (NAPQI) or production of conjugating molecules.
