ABSTRACT

This study was intended to evaluate the extent to which the application of standard costing technique affects the profitability of manufacturing companies in Nigeria. The study was guided by the following objectives; to examine the effect of standard costing on profit after tax of manufacturing companies in Nigeria, to assess the relationship between standard costing and profit after tax of manufacturing in Nigeria and to ascertain the need or relevance of standard costing techniques given the current technological advancement in Nigerian manufacturing companies. The study employed survey research design; questionnaires were used for data collection. Primary sources of data were used and data was analyzed using simple tables while chi-square was used in testing the hypotheses. The respondents under the study were 55 staff of Nigerian brewery, Aba north, Abia state. The study focused majorly on the application of standard costing technique and its effect on the performance of manufacturing companies in Nigeria. The study findings revealed that when the principles and techniques of standard costing are consistently applied in the company, it helps to achieve greater profits, aids in decision making process of the management, extremely helps in cost control and in the elimination of unprofitable products. Based on the findings of this research, it was rightly concluded that the application of standard costing have greater effect on the profit after tax of manufacturing firms.
