ABSTRACT
This
study was carried out to check the effect of soybean {Glycine max) and black
Velvet (Dialium gnineense) on some antioxidant enzymes and vitamins in male wistar
rats. Twenty (20) male wistar rats were divided randomly into four groups.
Group 1 served as the normal (control) and they received only commercial rat
feed and drinking water. Group 2 received soybean {Glycine max) and they also
received the commercial rat feed and drinking water. Group 3 received black
velvet and they also received the commercial rat feed and drinking water. Group
4 received soybean {Glycine max) and black velvet with little commercial rat
feed and drinking water. Changes in their body weights were recorded once in a
week throughout the duration of the experiment. Antioxidant assays and level of
lipid peroxidation were investigated. The result of the study indicated that
D.guineense showed non-significant (p>0.05) increase in catalase,
malondialdehyde (MDA) and vitamin C, but when compared to the normal group a
significant (p <0.05) increase in malondialdehyde (MDA), vitamin E and
catalase activity was observed when mixed with soybeans. D.guineense with feed
and when mixed with soybean showed a significant (p <0.05) increase in
vitamin C activity when compared with soybean with feed. D.guineense with feed
showed a high significant (p <0.05) increase in vitamin E activity when
compared to soybean with feed but showed a significant (p <0.05) decrease
when compared with D.guineese with soybean. Soybeans showed significant (p
<0.05) increase effect on the activity of malondialdehyde (MDA) and catalase
in group 2 and grroup 4 when compared to the normal group. The mixture
ofsoybean and D.guineense showed a significant (p <0.05) increase in
catalase and vitamin E activities when compared to D.guineense feed and the
normal group. Soybean showed a high significant (p <0.05) increase in
malondialdehyde (MDA) activity when compared with D.guineese with soybean and
D.guineense with feed but when mixed with D. guineense it showed a significant
(p <0.05) increase when compared to D.guineense with feed and in catalase
activity soybean showed a significant (p <0.05) increase when compared to
D.guineense with feed and a significant (p <0.05) decrease when compared to
D. guineense with soybean. In SOD activity soybean, D. guineense and D.guineese
with soybean showed non-significant (p <0.05) increase when compared to the
normal control.
