Effect Of Organic Amendment On Some Physico-Chemical Properties Of Soil In Bende Local Government Area Of Abia State, Nigeria
ABSTRACT
The experiment was conducted at
Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike in the soil science
laboratory to determine the effect of organic amendment on some physico-chemical
properties of soils in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, Nigeria. The
amendment were Aspilia Africana, poultry manure and combination of both poultry
manure and Aspilla africana, applied at the rate of Og,5g,lOg and 15g
respectively and replicated three times. Soil samples were collected from 0-15,
15-30, 30-45 cm depth, air dried and sieved through a 2mm sieve. The
physico-chemical properties analyzed include organic carbon, total nitrogen,
soil PH, available phosphorus, exchangeable bases, exchangeable acidity, ECEC
and % base saturation. Data collected was subjected using the mean values.
Result indicate that organic amendment used during the analysis improved
organic carbon, organic matter, total nitrogen, of the amended soil. Similar
trends were observed for soil pH, ECEC, and % base saturation while available
phosphorus decreased relative with the application of the amendment.
