ABSTRACT
The effect of
administration of methanol extract of Annona muricata leaves on serum
electrolytes, body weight and relative organ weight was studied in benign
prostatic hyperplasia Benign prostatic Hyperplasia induced male albino rats.
Phytochemical and acute toxicity study was conducted on the leaves of Annona
muricata using standard methods. Thirty six rats were divided into five
experimental groups of 6 rats each; Group l- normal control, Group 2- disease
control (BHP- group), Group 3- Standard drugs control (finasteride-group),
Group 4 and 5(200 and 400mg/kg of Annona muricata extract respectively). The NC
was not induced with BPH but was given olive oil administered orally (everyday)
and subcutaneous injection of olive oil (everyday) for 28 days. The disease
control group was induced BPH honnones every other day for 28 days and oral
administration of olive oil for 28 days. The standard control group (induced
BPH) was given finasteride 5mg/70kg administered orally everyday. The 200mg/kg
and 40mg/kg of methanol extract of Annona muricata leaves given to BPH induced
rats orally every day respectively. Results of the phytochemical studies showed
high levels of flavonoids, followed by, saponins, glycosides and reducing
sugar. Terpenoids has the lowest concentrations. The result also showed that
PSA levels decreased significantly (p<0.05) in groups treated with different doses of Annona muricata extract. Body weight, group 3,4 and 5 significantly (p><0.05) decrease in treated BPH rats compared to non treated diseased group. No significant difference (p>0.0)
was observed for chloride of all the experimental groups when compared with the
control. The group 4 and 5 has a significant increase when treated with
200mg/kg and 400mg/kg Annona muricata leaves compared with normal control rats,
and serum bicarbonate showed a significantly increases when treated with Annona
muricata extract when compared with normal. This study reveals important
phytochemical constituent which shows that Annona muricata may have beneficial
effect in preventing or suppressing the development of BPH and useful in
treatment and management.
