Effect Of Methanol Extracts Of Moringa Oleifera And Ocimum Gratissimum On Protein Glycation, Liver Glycogen And Glucose-6-Phosphatase Activity In Normo-Glycemic Rat.
ABSTRACT
The methanol extracts of IvIouingci ulei/L'ra and Ocirnum grcitis.simum \vere in\csdgated for their effects on protein glycation, liver glycogen and glucose-6-phosphatase activity using Normo glycemic albino rats. Thirty four male albino rats were used and were randomly assigned into 6 groups; 6 rats in the groups 1-4 and S in groups 5 and 6. Group I and 2 rats vcre administered high and low doses of the Ocirnum gralissirnum extract respectively, group 3 and 4 rats were administered high and low doses of the Moringa olei/èra extract respectivelv pmup 5 was the drug control (metformin) and group 6, the normal control. The rats were sacriliced rifler 30 days of extract administration and their bloods and organs collected to determinc die eftcct of the extracts on the parameters listed above. Glucose-6-phosphatase activity and ioten glycation concentration of the test groups showed no significant difference in relation Ia the control group but the high dose of Ocimum gratissimum showed a significance difference from the control group for the liver glycogen estimation. These findings suggest that the plant ntrricts have no effect on the parameters listed above in a normo-glycemic system and that high Jose of Ocimum gratissimurn has a lowering effect on liver glycogen concentration in a nomo-gl'a:mic system.
