Effect Of Information And Communication Technology On The Accounting Process Of Financial Institutions (A Study Selected Banks In Umuahia Abia State)
ABSTRACT
Information and communication technology (ICT) has taken the
centre stage in almost every aspect of human endeavor and the
banking industry is not left out. This research is aimed at assessing
the effect of information and communication technology on the
accounting processes of banks and other areas in the industry. The
researcher used five selected banks; Access bank plc, Eco bank plc,
First bank plc, Diamond bank and Zenith bank all located in
Umuahia, Abia state to ascertain the implications of this
development in the sector. A structured questionnaire, observations
and interviews were used to obtain data from the accessible
population of the selected banks which was analyzed using simple
percentage and chi-square. The result indicates that the application
of ICT has a signfficant and positive effect on the accounting
processes of Nigeria financial institutions. It was also discovered
that ICT adoption in banks has improved customers' services,
facilitated accurate records, provides for home and office banking
services, ensures convenient business hour, prompt and fair
attention and enhances faster services. The application of ICT also
improves the image of banks and has led to wider, faster and more
efficient market; it has also made work easier and more interesting.
From the findings of the study, it is recommended that ICT
application in banks be innovatively consolidated and improved
upon with specific reference to network, security, user accessibility,
worker education and training and provision of ICT Back-up Data
storage system.
