Effect Of Hydro-Ethanol Extract Of Hibiscus Sabdariffa Calyx On Kidney Electrolyte Profile Of Thioacetamide Induced Intoxicated Rats
ABSTRACT
The work is aimed at investigating the effect of hydro-ethanol extract of Hibiscus Sabdarffa calyx on kidney electrolyte profile ofthioacetamide induced intoxicated rats. Twenty rats were randomly grouped into five with four rats per group. Thioacetamide was induced in all the groups except group 1, which is the normal control. Group 2 served as the negative control which was not treated, group 3 received sylimarin (50mg/kg) and thioacetamide (300mg/kg), group 4 received extract 250mg/kg and thioactamide (300mg/kg) and group 5 received extract 500mg/kg and thioacetamide (300mg/kg). The result revealed a significant (p<O.O5) decrease in creatinine and chloride on the HCO3ion level of the rats treated with thioacetamide. The result also shows significant (p<O.OS) increase in urea, sodium, potassium when compared with the positive control. The result also indicated that Hibiscus Sabdarffa plant extract has varying effect on the kidney function indices but also has anti-toxic properties. Thus, Hibiscus Sabdariffa has a protective effect on the kidney.
