ABSTRACT
The effect of
some antibacterial soaps; Delta, Dettol, Duduosun, Tura and Zee were evaluated
on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus isolates using disc diffusion
method. Analysis of the antibacterial activities of the soaps were carried out
using different concentrations; 50mg/ml, I 00mg/ml, 200mg/ml, 300mg/ml,
400mg/ml and 500mg/ml. The highest diameter of inhibition for both organisms
were recorded with 500mg/ml concentration, with E. coli showing zone of
inhibition of 14.33mm and S. aureus, 16.67mm with Delta soap. E. coli showed
12.67mm and S, aureus showed 13.33mm zones of inhibition with Dettol soap. With
Dudu osun, E. coli showed zone of inhibition of 15.67mm and S. aureus, 18.00mm.
With Tura, E. coli showed 12.00mm and S. aureus, 1 2.00mm zones of inhibition
while with Zee, E. coli showed I 6.67mm and S. aureus. 20.00mm zones of
inhibition. The lowest diameter of inhibition for both organisms was recorded
with 50mg/ml concentration, where the test organisms showed no inhibition with Delta,
Dettol and Tura. With Dudu osun and Zee, E. coli showed 6.33mm and 8.33mm
respectively, while S. aureus showed 7.33mm and 9.67mm zones of inhibition
respectively. For £. coli, the lowest MIC of 62.5mg/ml was recorded by Zee
while the highest MIC of 500mg/ml was recorded by Tura and Dettol. Zee produced
the lowest MIC of 62.5mg/ml on S, aureus while the highest MIC of 500mg/ml was
produced by Tura. There was no significant difference (P>0.05) in the
activities of Zee and Dudu osun soaps on the test organisms, no significant
difference (P>0.05) in the activities of Delta and Dettol soaps on the test
organisms, but there was significant difference (P< 0.05) between all the
soaps and Tura. The antibacterial activities of these soaps on the test organisms
are in decreasing order as follows; Zee, Dudu osun, Delta, Dettol and Tura. The
result obtained so far in this study showed that Zee and Dudu osun soaps have a
high potential for use in the treatment of skin diseases and skin disinfections
