ABSTRACT

This research work examined the effect of dividend policy on the profitability of quoted oil and gas  companies.  The objective  of  the study  is  10   de/ermine  effect  dividend policy on the profitability of quoted oil and gas companies.  The research designed used was ex post facto research design.  Data were sourced from  secondary sources. Analysis of data and testing of hypotheses were done through the aid of statistical tools such as tables, and multiple regression model. The findingsfrom data analyzed indicates that dividend policy  has significant  effect on the profitability of the studied quoted  companies dividend policy  has  significant effect on the profit after tax; dividend policy  has significant effect on return  on asset;  dividend policy has significant effect on the return on investment  companies under study. The study however recommends that  Oil and gas firms willing to maximize shareholders wealth and firms  value should endeavour to consistently  increase their dividend payout  ratio as this sends a signal that the firm is financially  healthy. Secondly, retained earnings should be set aside whenever possible as this could positively  impact  the profitability  of oil and gas firms  in Nigeria and finally  the board of directors of oil and gas firms should be prudent  in declaring dividend as higher  dividend  could mean that the share price are under-priced which could affectfuture dividends .
