ABSTRACT

The  role played   by computer   in the  existence,   growth  and  efficient  operation  banks  in Nigeria   are  numerous.      Thus,   this  research  work  was  geared  towards  examining    the "effect  of computerized   accounting   system  on the performance   of Nigerian    Banks"   with  particular    reference   to  Union   Bank  Plc.     With  a  good research  design   and other  specifications,    this researcher  conducted  a survey  using highly   structured   questionnaires    to  poll  relevant  data.     The  data  were  structured appropriately    and  a  chi-square   technique   was  used  to  test  each   of  the  stated hypothesis,      Result  showed  that  the  first hypothesis   could   not be rejected  for the fact  that   respondent's    opinion   were   in  line  with  those  of  the  researcher,    that introduction   of  computer   in the  accounting   system  of  Union  bank  Plc,   Owerri, branch  has  improved  the efficiency  and profitability   of its operations.     The  same ppsitive    result  was  gotten   from  test  of the  second  hypothesis.      This   researcher therefore   conclude  that  full   computerization   is   indispensable    in  Nigerian   banks. Based  on this,  Banks  in  Nigeria   should  make necessary  to comply  with  directives oif the Central  Bank  of Nigeria   on full  computerization.      Further  training   of banks staff is  also  recommended.
