ABSTRACT

The  study  was far   undergone  to  discover  the   "Effect  of  company  income  taxes  on  the performance  of small  and medium scale enterprises  in Nigeria",   taking a study of selected enterprises. The study is aimed at evaluating the performance of business enterprises in selected companies, so as tofind  out whether companies are aware of all their tax duties and obligations, principles, policies and those major problems affecting them as well as their various businesses and also to know how regular companies pay  taxes. The study applied both qualitative and quantitative  research   designs   where journals,   historical   data,   magazines  and financial statements of the listed microfinance banks were implemented. Data was basically collectedfrom secondary sources. Most  business owners are aware of taxes paid,  unaware of the mode of assessment and not much assistance is given as regards to tax awareness.  The findings  so far exposed the problems faced  by the tax payers  as regards mode of assessment,  tax collection, inefficiency  by tax collectors,  loss of stock as a result of taxes,  loss of sales, low profits due to high tax rates and vital equipment used in the tax collection process. Recommendations on the effect of taxes include; reduction of rate of company income tax, educating companies as well business  community  on  the  different  tax  rates,  improving  the  method  of  collecting  taxes, introducing a scheme that should allow firms  to pay  their tax obligations at installments,  and lastly finding  a means of assessing the tax both small and medium  enterprises are required to pay early in the financial year so as to pave wayfor  businesses to pay up their obligations rather demandingfor payment immediately.
