ABSTRACT

Soils of the south-eastern Nigeria are mostly ultisol (Ahn 1993) characterized by acidity with a pH value below 5.5. This is cause by the nature of the parent material, heavy leaching due to excessive rainfall, short 13110w system, arising from high population pressure on land, weathering processes and continuous use of fertilizer especially ammonium sulphates (Fitzpatrick, 1994). A serious but often ignored mean of acidification of crops (Nnadi and Aora 1985) indicated that ammonia fertilizer is the strongest acidifies and phosahate fertilizers released phosphoric acid which causes low soil pH. Others fertilizer salts like potassium chloride and magnesium sulphate increases the concen ration of Aluminum ion in the soil and hence lower pH (Brenes and Pearson 1973). Soil acidity increases the availability of aluminum :on and manganese which leads to deficiency of phosphorus, calcium, copper and magnesium in the soil, resulting in poor yields and uptake of nutrient elements y plant roots, (Mayz and Cartwright 1984). Reduced acidification increases exchangeable calcium content thus, enhancing crop roots growth and general uptake of phosphorus (Adams 1984). The use of liming materials has proved to be effective in reducing soil acidity; thereby increasing crop yields (Obi and Ekperigin 2001).
