ABSTRACT

 This research work focused on the effects of climate change on cocoa production in Nigeria. The specific objective of the study were to ascertain the trend of cocoa production, ascertain the trend on climate change, examine the impact of climate change on cocoa production in Nigeria and to make recommendations based on findings. Data for the study were collected through Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Bulletin, National Bureau of Statistics, internet materials, newspaper publication and journals, and analyzed with econometric approach to test the degree of correlation between the variables by exploring trend analysis, unit root test, Johansen cointegration test and vector erro test. Cocoa product.ion in Nigeria has been experiencing a declining trend in recent years and many factors have been implicated. One of these factors is the effect of climatic factors hence, this study investigates the trend of climate change, trend of cocoa production, impact of climate change on cocoa production, climatic variable in cocoa seedling raising, production and processing, coping strategies adopted by the farmers and also access the degree if vulnerability. For sustainable cocoa production in Nigeria, weather which is an uncomfortable variable is important factors whose effect on cocoa is difficult to quantify in field environment. In all rainfall and temperature were observed to have been the most important climatic factors that affect cocoa production in Nigeria.
