ABSTRACT
This study was conducted in the green house of Michael
Okpara UniversitY of Agriculture, Umudike to determine the effect of cassava
mill effluent (CME) for maize performance and some soil physical and chemical
properties in an ultisol. Six levels of CME was applied (0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%
and 50%) and replicated four times. The experiment was laid out in a completely
randomized design (CRD) giving a total of 24 treatment pots. The effluent was
applied to the soil and allowed to equilibrate for two weeks before sowing the
maize seeds. The experiment lasted for 8 weeks with the following parameters
taken at two weeks interval; plant height, numbers of leaves per plant, stem
girth while fresh weight and dry matter weight of maize plant were obtained at
the end of the eight weeks. Plant tissue was analyzed for nitrogen, phosphorus
and potassium. Analysis of variance and Fisher's least significant difference
methods were used to analyze the data The results of the analysis showed that
cassava mill effluent enhanced such soil physical and chemical properties as
organic matter content, soil pH, base saturation, available phosphorus and
exchangeable cations. Growth and nutrient uptake in maize plant were positively
influenced by CME e.g. effluent at 50% application produced the tallest plant
of mean value 29.60cm while the control had the shortest plant of 19.05cm. Also
50% of cassava mill effluent was revealed to have the highest significant
influence in all the parameters when compared with the control.
