ABSTRACT
This study investigated the effect of Aqueous Root Extract of Sphenocentrurn io/lvam.ini on some biochemical parameters (Urea, Creatinine , Calcium and Magnuesium ) of allozan induced diabetic albino rats. After two weeks of acclimatization, the rats were randomly grouped in flve , of four rats per group. Diabetes mellitus was induced in the experimental rats ( Group. II, Ill, IV and V by intraperitional injection of allozan monohydrate at a single dose of 1 30mg/kg body weight and were orally administered for two weeks with aqueous root extract of the plant (200mg/kg and 400mg/kg body weight ). Group II was treated with glibenclarnide (5mg/kg body weight) and served as positive control, group III was not treated (negative control), while group I was neither induced with diabetes not treated (normal control ) some biochemical parameters (urea, creatinine, Magnesium and calcium ) and blood sugar level were determined at the end of the administration and were compared with the normal control group. The lov dose group (60.68± 0.29,2.20± 0.01,10.46± 0.03 and 14.38± 0.11) showed a significant (P<0.05) difference in urea, creai.inine, calcium and magnesium when compared with the normal control groups (50.52±0.03, l.81±0.81±0.01,11.24±0.05, and 13.05±0.15) the high dose group (1.S6±0.13 and 10.86±0.01)showed a significant(p<0.05) difference in creatinine and calcium, and no significant (pO.OS) difference in urea and magnesium respectively, when compared with the normal control group. However, the extract at all doses showed a significant(p<0.05) reduction in blood sugar level. Its effect was dose dependent and was more pronounced with the low close, thus, may not he toxic to the kidney. The results of this study, suggest that aqueous root extract of Sphenocentrum jollyanwn could be advance in development of new oral anti —diabetic drug.
