ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of aqueous extract of celastrus scandens leaves on liver function of alloxan-induced diabetes in albino rats. Twenty-eight albino rats were divided into seven groups (1-7) of four per group. Group 1 was the normal control without induction nor received plant extract,Group 2 was extract control without induction but received extract at 500mg/kg of body weight (b.w),Group 3 was negative control induced Iml/kg b.w of alloxan but no extract was received. Group 4 was induced Iml/kg b.w of alloxan and received extract at 200mg/kg of b.w, Group 5 was induced Iml/kg b.w of alloxan and received extract at 500mg/kg of b.w, Group 6 was induced Iml/kg b.w of alloxan and received extract at lOOOmg/kg ofb.w, and Group 7 was induced Iml/kg b.w of alloxan and received glibenclamide at 75mg/kg of b.w.All animals was allowed free access to feed and water. The result from the study showed that glucose level were significantly (p<0.05) decreased in group 4 and 5 when compared with the negative control group, total protein was significantly (P >< 0.05) decreased in group 1 when compared with the negative control, Albumin levels decreased in group 1 but not significant when compared with the negative control, Creatinine levels decreased in group 1, 2 and 7 but not significant when compared with the negative control, Urea level was decreased in group 2 and 6 but not significant when compared with the negative control. Serum liver enzymes, Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), Alanine amino transferase (ALT) and Aspartate amino transferase showed significant (P>0.05) decrease in group 1 ,2,4, 5, 6 and 7 when compared with the negative control, while total bilirubin showed decrease in group 2 and 7 but not significant when compared to the negative control. This suggest that celastrus scandens does not have damage on kidney and liver enzymes and may also be used for the management of diabetes.
