ABSTRACT

This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of single phase straight diet on the growth of broilers. Four broiler diets were formulated containing 22%, 24%, 26% and 28% crude protein inclusion. Sixty day old chicks were randomly distributed into four treatment groups of fifteen broiler chicks, which were randomly distributed into three replicate with five birds per replicate. The broilers chicks were raised under the same environmental and management conditions which include provision of feed, water and medications. The basal diet was augmented with soybean meal to take the crude protein to 22%, 24%, 26% and 28%. The experiment lasted for six weeks. There were no significant differences recorded in the live weight, dressed weight, percentage dressed weight, drumstick, wings, neck, head, thigh, shank and breast of all the treatment groups except the back cut. The back cut ofT2was significantly (P>O.05) higher when compared with the back cut ofT3and T4, the back cut ofT3and T4are similar with . In the growth performance parameters, the initial body weight ofT2was significantly (P<O.05) lower when compared with T1, T3and T4, but T1, T3 and T4, which were similar. In the final body weight, there were no significant differences recorded. The average weekly feed intake ofT2was significantly (P>O.05) higher whel1 compared with T and T3but similar with T4. The average weekly weight gain of T1and 12 was significantly (P>O.05) higher when compared with T3and 1 4 . The feed conversion ratio of 'l'3 was significantly (P>O.05) higher when compared with T1, T2and T4. 14was significantly (P<O.05) lower when compared with T1and T2. It can be cOncluded that the crude protein inclusion in T2was efficient for rapid growth of broiler birds to attain the anticipated dressed weight of 1.35kg— 1.5kg.
