ABSTRACT

This work was done to determine some hazardous substances in fruit juices marketed in Umuahia using acceptable chemicals and biochemical parameters, Precursors of carcinogenic N-nitrosamines(nitrate and nitrite) as well as lipid peroxidation products were determined spectrophotometrically in fourteen samples fruit drinks frequently consumed by school children. The pH of these fruit drinks were also measured. The fruit drinks analyzed could be said to be acidic drinks since the pH range were from (2.41-3.83).Varying concentrations of nitrite and malondialdehyde (11.0 1-62.29p.g/dl) and (2.44 — 3.80) respectively were also determined. Nitrate were only detected in few of the samples. The toxicological implications of the findings are discussed.
