ABSTRACT
The
determination of iron content was carried out among selected iron-rich food
samples. The samples (Outed pumpkin, garden egg leaves, maize, sweet potatoes
and pap) were bought from Ahiaeke, a market in the semi urban region and
Amawom, a market in the rural region or lkwuano L.G./\. in Abia State. Nigeria.
Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 22. ANOVA was also
carried out to compare differences for the variables analyzed. All tests were
considered signilicant at p value less than 0.05 (p<0.05). The result showed
the following mean I standard error: (8.2533 1 0. I 6384) (2.8833 t·0.20480)
iron in Outed pumpkin, (5.140010.08718) (6.056710.09821) iron in garden cggs.
(2.066710.08333) (3.740010.14295) iron in maize. (4.133310.08819)
(1.126710.09333) iron in pap and (2.0033 10.01453) (4.043310.05364) iron in
sweet potatoes, for the rural and semi-urban regions respectively. A
significant (p<0.05) increase in iron concentration of Outed pumpkin and pap
gotten from Ahiacke was observed when compared with their counterparts gotten
from Amawom whereas a significant (p<0.05) decrease in iron concentration
was observed in garden eggs. maize and sweet potatoes gotten from Ahiaeke when
compared to those gotten from Amawom. The result of these findings show that
dietary iron from iron-rich foods if adequately and appropriately consumed
would increase scrum iron concentration.
