ABSTRACT
The study was carried out to ascertains the
determinants offertility rate among women and its implicationsfor population
growth in Nigeriafrom 1980 to 2017. The objective ofthe study was to examine
how the fertility rate in women has actually been influenced in Nigeria. The
study employed cointegration and Error correction model approach. The data for
the study were sourced from Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Statistical bulletin
and Economic Development Indicator. The test conducted includes, the Augmented
Dickey-Fuller Unit Root test, the Johansen cointegration test and the Error
correction Mechanism test. The result from the unit root test revealed that
none of the variables were stationary at level, but they all became stationary
atfirst difference. The cointegration test revealed that there is a long-run
relationship among the variables. The ECM result revealed that the ECM
coefficient was 0.66, shows that 66% ofthe fluctuations in the short run are corrected
at the long-run on annual basis. Age was found to have positive and significant
impact on FRA W, Use ofContraceptives had a negative and significant impact on
FRAW. Also, Induced Abortion was found to have a negative and significant
effect on FRAW. The Breusch-Godfrey Serial Correlation LM Test shows that there
is evidence ofno autocorrelation among the series. The study therefore
recommends amongst that: there is the need for the Government to collaborate
with various NGO to carry out a mass sensitization for women, mostly those
within the fertility age group so that they can understand the proper way to
take care oftheir body. This will ensure that they remain productive as they
advance in age. There is also the need to get the people informed on the proper
and efficient use of contraceptives, this will ensure that contraceptives are
not been misused and hence, avoid damage in the reproductive part ofthe body
