ABSTRACT

The project was carried out to investigate the relative potential of rice straw (Oryza. sativa), dry leaves of almond plant (Terminalia catappa), lawngrass mowings (Elusine indica) and sugarcane waste (Saccharum officinarum) as suitable subtrates for the cultivation of Pleurotus florida Eger. Rice straw was used as control. The steps involved in the cultivation were preparation of plate cultures of P. Florida, spawning with rice straw, pasteurization of the substrates, innoculation of spawn into the pasteurized substrates, incubation, fructification and harvesting. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design with four treatments and five replicates. Primordial formation was fastest on rice straw (21 days) and the fruiting bodies formed in 23 days from the day of innoculation. Rice straw yielded the highest number of fruit bodies, 77. Next to it was the sugarcane waste, 16; lawngrass mowing, 10; and dry almond leaves yielded the lowest number of fruit bodies, 1. The fresh weight for fruiting bodies was highest for rice straw, 226.6g. It was 73g for sugarcane waste; 20g for lawngrass mowings and 1g for dry almond leaves. Thus rice straw which was already used commercially in oyster mushroom cultivation is considered the most suitable agro-waste for cultivating P. florida.
