ABSTRACT

This research work focused on the comparative study of the physiochemical composition of some sachet water samples sold in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU). In this study physicochemical analyses of three (3) brands of sachet water packaged within Umudike were evaluated to compare their compliance with the standards of the World Health Organization (WHO) and Nigeria Industrial Standard (NIS).The parameters evaluated include Organoleptic properties (odour, taste and colour) of sachet water, which shows that they are odourless, tastless and colourless. pH (7.52, 7.04, 7.23 respectively of the water samples), TDS (0.0008mg/l, 0.0026mg/l, 0.0018mg/I respectively of the water samples), TSS (0. l 242mg/l, 0.0274mg/l, 0.023 1 mg/l respectively of the water samples), Turbidity (0.019, 0.027, 0.028 NTU respectively), Salinity (0.0lmg/1, 0.02mg/I, 0.04mg/I respectively), TS (0.125mg/l, 0.030mg/l, 0.170mg/l respectively), the values are determined from the analysis and it all conform to the WHO standard. The presence of the elements (Copper, Chromium, Iron, Lead, Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Chlorine, Sodium, pH level and Alkalinity) were all determined and are shown in Chapter Four of this work. The results from the laboratory analysis showed that all the Organoleptic properties for all the three brands of sachet water conform with the WHO permissible limit. Most of the physicochemical parameters conform with the WHO standard except Chloride ofDTW, MTW and BTW sachet water which have the values of 266.3mg/dl, l 24.3mg/dl, 21 l .3mg/dl respectively to the WHO of 250 and sodium of the above samples which have relatively high values (0.72mg/dl, 17.50mg/dl, 12.63mg/dl) to compare with the WHO standard, less than I0.
